5 ways to detox for healthy skin

Fine lines, puffiness and tired skin can be caused by dehydration, lack of essential nutrients, or skincare that isn’t right for us. Over time, our skin changes and needs different internal and external care. Internal care includes healthy food, water, the right supplements, fresh oxygen, exercise, detoxification and adequate rest. External care is what we are using on our skin such as beauty, make up and skin products.

Detoxification is an incredibly important aspect of healthy skin, as in today’s environment we are constantly exposed to toxins we didn’t used to be exposed to, such as pollution, chemicals in our food and skin care, water and it’s important for our detoxification pathways to work properley to maintain homeostasis in the body.

1. Lemon juice in water
Lemon juice first thing in the morning on an empty stomach is more powerful thank you think. It not only gets the digestion juices started, allowing for better breakdown of food and assimilation of nutrients, it is also a potent source of Vitamin C. Vitamin C is a great antioxidant and anti-inflammatory for skin health.

2. Sweat
This is one of the fastest way of asking your body to rid body of toxins. It get’s the lymph nodes working and also increases blood circulation, brining fresh blood to the surface of the skin. This fresh blood delivers oxygen directly to the skin and helps renewal. Think about that cute red face after a workout, and how it will be directly helping your skin get a good dose of fresh blood and oxygen helpful for fighting and soothing inflammation.

3. An abundance of fruits and Veges
Fruits and veges contain natural antioxidants, vitamins, minerals that assist our body in facilitating the detoxification process. Focusing on brassicas and cruciferous veges such as brussel sprouts, broccoli, cabbage and greens assist our liver in helping to eliminate excess hormones i.e. estrogen or androgens that can upset our skin balance.

4. Make up free days
Giving your skin a break from make up gives it a chance to breathe, sweat, and release toxins through the pores without any interruption. It’s especially important to remove make up before sleep and working out, so that the skin is given an opportunity to secrete toxins.

5. Relaxation (stress free zone)
Stress is one of the main causes of skin issues, and while relaxation isn’t an obvious method of detoxfication, relaxation is an important way to signal to the body it is safe to repair. Slowing down indicates to the body its safe to be in the ‘rest and digest’ state, allowing the body to use it’s energy to focus on bodily repairs, detoxification and homeostasis rather than sympathetic ‘fight or flight’ where energy is directed to the extremities and away from the organs.

6. Foods for the liver
It’s important for our liver to be functioning in order for both phase 1 and phase 2 to be helping our body to get rid of any excess toxins or hormones. Turmeric, grapefruit, blueberries, beetroot, greens, fish and salmon.
